Jetha ji Sessa Festival, all you ever wanted to know
Sessa festival is observed on Jeth ji ummas or Amavasya in Jyeshta month (As per lunar calender). In olden days the male clan would often travel overseas for business purposes and the family would be worried about their safety, particularly if they happen to travel during the times when the turbulence in sea or rivers would pose a threat to the human lives. Ladies in the family would dedicate a sweet dish to each male member and would cook sesa i.e boiled kabuli chola and peela chaanwran (Turmeric laced rice). The ladies would gather at the waterbody and bring along the sesa including Puri, shallow fried potatoes, pakora, seyun (sweet sewayian) along with the respective dedicated sweet. A small prayer is recited and then the Prasad of all the food brought by ladies is mixed and distributed. In modern times when even Female clan travel overseas we pray for all the family members, irrespective of the gender! Big News for Sindhis. Government as declared the date for Census in India. It will start from Apr-2026. During the last census that happened in year 2011 total count of Sindhis was only 27 Lakh which is actually wrong. As per many Sindhi organisations Total Sindhis could be more than 1 crore in India. One of the issue is many Sindhis didn’t mention in the survey that they are Sindhis. This has impacted many of the provisions that are made for Sindhis. So all the Sindhis across India are requested to proudly mention themselves as Sindhis in coming Census survey. More the number of Sindhis, more will be the budget from Government for Sindhis.
